Our children Bella 5 & Bailey 7 have always, always loved orangutans. The theme of sustainability in school this year lead to many discussions about looking after the earth, conservation, deforestation and the impact this has on orangutan habitat. We then went to see the film Born to be Wild and afterwards we got online to investigate Dr Birute Galdikas and the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) further. We were alarmed to discover that Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest is under threat of being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantation or similar development etc. This would be absolutely devastating for the 200 wild orangutans currently seeking refuge in the forest (after already being displaced from cleared surrounding forests) and reduce further, the ever diminishing rainforest where rehabilitated orphaned orangutans can be released.
Wanting to help - Bella and Bailey both raided money from their piggy banks to sponsor an acre of land each.

Bella has made me 'pinky promise' that I will do what I can to help save Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest. Such wisdom for a 5 year old!
So, James and I decided that we would take all of the money that we were saving for a family holiday and use it to sponsor land too. It was a big decision, it was a lot of money to us - but how much is even a single orangutan's life worth to you?....really? How much is it worth to try save them and protect their habitat forever? We can save up more money and go on a holiday next year - Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest needs to be saved ASAP. So far our little family have sponsored 34 acres of Rawa Kuno Legacy forest and we hope to help save more......
Now I am doing my best to follow through on my promise......trying to raise awareness, but more importantly trying to get people to take some action - to sponsor land or give a donation of any amount. Or do some fund raising yourselves to try help save it. It really comes down to $ at this stage. My fear is that any day now I'm going to get the word that the land has been sold and has been reduced to a charred desolate wasteland and most of the orangutans have been killed or orphaned in the process. I would be heartbroken.
So, if you haven't already joined - join the Orangutan Action | Save Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest Facebook community and spread the word, but most importantly donate, sponsor or fundraise before Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest is gone forever!
There are a number of different ways you can help today!
1) Sponsor a piece of the forest - select the piece of land that you want to save via the interactive map here.
2) Donate any amount here - just indicate that you want the money to go to Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest
3) I asked OFI to set up a Save Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest campaign on FirstGiving website & they did here - Yay!! It's simple & easy to set up your own page & become a fundraiser for RKLF.
